Working During Peak Season: What to Expect and How to Excel in Warehousing and Distribution Jobs

Warehouse workers in safety gear check inventory, ensuring smooth warehouse distribution during peak season; the Spectra360 logo is at the upper left corner.

What is the peak season for warehouses? December is the busiest month for most warehouses because of the increased demand for warehouse operations. The holiday rush brings heavier workloads, tighter deadlines for order fulfillment, and unrelenting pressure to meet skyrocketing demand.

Unsurprisingly, warehousing is ranked as one of the most stressful industries in the U.S., with a stress score of 28.92 out of 100.¹ On top of that, the hourly pay structure makes it easy to skip much-needed time off, as every missed shift directly affects your paycheck.

While overtime opportunities and extra pay can be tempting, pushing yourself too hard can lead to burnout, exhaustion, and long-term health issues—problems that affect not only your job but also your ability to care for your loved ones and achieve your personal goals.

32% of transport and warehouse workers say they’re often too tired to spend time with family and friends because of their jobs.² That’s why prioritizing well-being and managing stress isn’t just helpful—making it through this busy season in good health and spirits is essential.

How to Successfully Scale Through the Holiday Season

Warehouse management faces many challenges during the peak season. Here are nine strategies for coping and thriving even during the busiest times.

1. Take Care of Your Body

Working long hours in a physically demanding environment means your body has to be up for the challenge. Start with hydration—don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink water, as dehydration can sneak up on you, leading to fatigue and brain fog.

Food matters, too. Eating meals high in protein, healthy fats, and complex carbs will keep your energy steady throughout the day. Avoid sugary snacks and drinks that only give you a quick spike before crashing.

Take a few minutes to stretch before your shift and during breaks. Warming up loosens your muscles, reduces strain, and can prevent the aches and pains that come with repetitive movements. And don’t skimp on sleep—it’s tempting to stay up late on your days off, but getting consistent, quality rest will keep you in top form for long shifts.

2. Keep Your Mind Strong

When peak season hits, the mental demands can be just as challenging as the physical ones. Be sure to set realistic expectations for yourself. The workload will be intense but remember that it’s only temporary.

It’s okay to feel overwhelmed—everyone does—but keep things in perspective. Taking short mental breaks throughout the day can make a big difference. A few seconds to close your eyes and take a deep breath can help you stay calm.

Try positive visualization: imagine yourself finishing tasks smoothly, staying steady, and efficiently handling challenges. And don’t go it alone; talk to coworkers or friends about what you’re going through. Sometimes, just sharing can lighten the load and bring some fresh advice.

3. Stay Organized and Manage Your Time Wisely

Time is everything when you’re on a tight schedule. Before each shift, set a loose plan for what you need to accomplish. Tackling the most urgent or challenging tasks early, while you’re still fresh, can make the rest of the day feel more manageable.

If your warehouse provides management software with organizational tools like scanners or tablets, take full advantage—they can save you time and reduce mistakes. Avoid multitasking, as it often slows you down; focusing on one task at a time improves your accuracy and efficiency.

Most importantly, use your downtime wisely—organize your workspace, review the warehouse layout, gather necessary tools, or take inventory so you’re ready for the next task as soon as it comes up.

4. Practice Safe Movements

Lifting, bending, and standing are all part of the job in a warehouse, but doing these things the wrong way can lead to injuries. Lift with your legs, not your back, to avoid strain.

Hold heavy items close to your body and avoid twisting while lifting. This simple adjustment can prevent back pain. Wear supportive shoes with good cushioning to protect your feet and back during long shifts.

Taking short ergonomic breaks for stretching can make a big difference, especially for your lower back and shoulders. And don’t hesitate to ask for help when handling heavy or awkward items.

5. Communicate Openly

Good communication can ensure peak season success. If the workload is too much, talk to your supervisor—they’d often rather know than have you struggling in silence.

Don’t hesitate to ask questions if you’re unclear about a task. The less time you spend guessing, the faster you can get things done right.

Also, maintain good communication with your coworkers. Working as a team, offering help, and asking for assistance can lighten everyone’s load and keep morale high. It’s a tough season, but remember, you’re all in it together.

6. Use Technology and Automation to Your Advantage

Many warehouses now use technology to make work more efficient, so use these tools to help lighten your load. If your warehouse has a Warehouse Management System (WMS), spend some time learning it thoroughly.

These systems can speed up and simplify tasks such as inventory management, order picking, demand forecasting, returns management, and order packing. Barcode scanners, tablets, and other devices can help you work more efficiently, reducing time and minimizing errors.

If any automated systems are in place, like conveyor belts or robots, take advantage of them to reduce physical strain and improve productivity.

7. Set Small Goals and Reward Yourself

Having personal milestones to look forward to can help keep you motivated during the peak season. Set small, achievable goals each day or week, such as finishing tasks on time or keeping your work area organized.

Celebrating these mini-accomplishments—like treating yourself to your favorite snack or relaxing with a show after a long shift—can help break up the long stretch of peak season. Tracking your progress over time lets you see how much you’ve done, which can be a huge morale booster when things get intense.

8. Be Flexible

Peak season is unpredictable. Last-minute schedule changes, unexpected high demand, and rush orders can happen at any time. Try to stay flexible and keep an open mind.

Accept that some things will shift unexpectedly and approach these moments with a problem-solving mindset. Instead of getting frustrated, look for quick adjustments you can make to get the job done. If extended hours are called for, keep your personal schedule as flexible as possible to make it easier to handle these changes.

9. Reflect and Prepare for Next Time

Once the peak season ends, take a moment to reflect on what went well and what didn’t. Think about the strategies that helped you stay organized and manage stress effectively.

These insights can be beneficial for the next peak season. Identifying any challenges can help you prepare better next time, such as improving your time management skills, using ergonomic techniques, or communicating more effectively with supervisors.

Asking for feedback from coworkers or supervisors can give you even more valuable input, helping you grow stronger and more prepared for future peak seasons.
