Body Hacks for Work: Simple Ergonomics for Peak Productivity

Proper Lifting Techniques 

A good training session on proper lifting techniques can mean the difference between health and harm. Intentionally cultivating the habit of using proper lifting techniques when moving heavy objects around preserves your safety and prevents you from causing serious harm to yourself. Endeavor to position yourself correctly, lift with your legs instead of your back, and always employ mechanical aid where necessary.

Your worksite layout and orientation are important to your safety. An improperly organized workspace increases the incidence of unnecessary and repetitive bending, and having work tools strewn all over your worksite may increase the risk of an accidental fall and either cause harm to you or damage your tool. Keep your worksite well-organized and your tools within easy reach to minimize unnecessary strain.

Taking breaks is essential to both your physical and mental health. Ensure you’re routinely resting your body between tasks and relaxing adequately between workdays.

Driving might appear easy, but it can be incredibly stressful. Experts have found that driving for long periods of time elicits a stress reaction from your body.³ It can also damage your cardiovascular health, as prolonged sitting increases the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Warehouse workers are not spared this degree of risk, being prone to fire injuries, slips and falls, improper handling of equipment, and other safety hazards.  

Here are some measures drivers and warehouse workers can take to help mitigate workplace injuries: 

Seat Adjustment 

If your job requires you to drive for long periods of time, make sure your seat is comfy, sturdy, and able to correctly support your back. 

Shelving and Storage 

Warehouse workers can be seriously injured when trying to access tools. To reduce bending, reaching, or stretching for your tools, place your most frequently used items on a shelf set around waist level. Store any tools not in immediate use and keep your workspace free of clutter.  

Job Rotation 

For both drivers and warehouse workers, working too many hours at the same duty post spells bad news for your physical and mental health. Spending long hours at work puts you at risk of developing an overuse injury like carpal tunnel syndrome or tennis elbow, and these can become complicated enough to require surgery.  

You may also become bored or disillusioned with your work, which reduces your job satisfaction and negatively impacts your mental health. Implementing a job rotation schedule can help vary your daily tasks and keep your body and mind in better shape.

Desk workers are sedentary workers, which means they are bound to sit for a long time and get very little physical activity while at work. This runs them at risk for not only cardiovascular problems like diabetes and heart diseases but also makes them vulnerable to musculoskeletal disorders like carpal tunnel syndrome from prolonged typing and sciatica from prolonged sitting.

Optimize Your Workspace 

Your workspace is where you’ll be spending much of your time, hence, make sure it’s tailored for your comfort and safety. Keep your arms parallel to the ground when you’re typing. This helps you avoid unnecessary wrist strain. Choose a chair with good lumbar support as this will help maintain the natural curvature of your spine. Alternatively, you can use a standing desk, which will keep you on your feet and mobile. 

Regular Movement 

The most dangerous element of sedentary work is the lack of sufficient physical exercise, so trying to move your body as a desk worker goes a long way to preserving your health. You can choose to occasionally go out for a short walk during your lunch break or take the stairs instead of an elevator if you need to move around the building. Take advantage of opportunities to put your body in motion.

Ergonomic tools are a great way to avoid straining your body needlessly. Using adjustable furniture, for instance, can help save you unnecessary discomfort if your desk or chair doesn’t quite fit your body type. 

Stay Hydrated 

Drink plenty of fluids during work hours to keep your body cool, refreshed, and optimized for a stellar performance.
