How to Handle Seasonal Driver Demand in a Tight Market

Staffing coordinator addressing seasonal driver demand at a warehouse dock

Do you struggle to find enough drivers when business picks up? You are not alone. Transportation and logistics teams across the country face the same challenge every peak season.

The tighter the driver market gets, the harder it becomes to cover seasonal demand without added cost, stress, or delays. Employers who wait until the rush begins often end up paying more for less experienced help.

This article covers how to recognize seasonal driver demand early and build a staffing plan before the pressure hits.

Why Seasonal Driver Demand Creates More Risk in a Tight Market

Seasonal driver demand is the short-term spike in driver needs during busy periods. For transportation and logistics employers, this spike often shows up during:

  • Retail peaks
  • Holiday shipping
  • Construction season
  • Produce season
  • Other high-volume freight periods

These peaks put pressure on the driver pool at the same time competitors are hiring too. Construction-linked flatbed freight is a clear example: spot rates for flatbed freight recently hit a record high, up more than 30 percent year-over-year, driven in part by construction season and tighter specialized capacity.
¹ When several of these seasonal peaks overlap, the pressure on driver availability compounds.

Managing seasonal demand is already hard. A tight driver market makes it harder.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects about 237,600 openings for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers each year from 2024 to 2034, with many of these openings tied to drivers leaving the field or retiring. ² When employers wait until peak season starts, they have less time to find and screen qualified drivers. That delay leads to higher wages, more overtime, and rushed hiring decisions.

Compliance adds another layer of risk. Commercial driver’s license (CDL) hiring requires license checks, drug testing, motor vehicle record reviews, and safety documentation. These steps cannot be skipped just because demand is high. Moving too fast can lead to safety issues, regulatory problems, and hires who do not stay.

How to Plan Ahead Before Peak Season Hits

What can employers do to reduce this pressure? The key is to plan before the rush begins. Here is how to prepare for seasonal driver demand before it affects your routes, service, and costs.

1. Review Past Demand

Start by looking at your last peak season. Check where your team felt the most pressure. This may include:

  • Missed routes
  • Late deliveries
  • Overtime use
  • Driver callouts
  • Roles that took too long to fill

This step helps you see what actually happened instead of guessing. When you understand the past, you can plan better for the next peak period.

2. Define Your Driver Mix

Not every staffing gap needs the same type of driver. Some routes may require CDL drivers, while others may need non-CDL support. Some needs may only last a few weeks, while others may point to a longer-term hiring need.

Before peak season begins, decide what kind of support your team will need. Defining the driver mix early helps you avoid overhiring, underhiring, or filling the wrong roles.

3. Choose the Right Staffing Model

Once you know what your team needs, the next step is choosing the right staffing model. Here are the three main options:

  • Contingent drivers are temporary workers hired for short-term needs such as extra routes, vacation coverage, or busier periods.
  • Temp-to-hire drivers work on the job before the company decides whether to hire them permanently. This model works well when a seasonal need might grow into something long-term.
  • Direct hire means bringing on a driver as a permanent employee from the start. This option is best for lasting driver needs.

4. Start Recruiting Before Demand Rises

Driver hiring takes time. CDL roles require license checks, background screening, motor vehicle record reviews, and DOT compliance steps. These steps cannot be rushed just because freight volume is high.

Starting early gives your team more time to screen carefully, compare candidates, and make better hiring decisions.

5. Work With a Staffing Partner

A staffing partner can help you build a driver pipeline before peak season begins. This gives your company access to drivers who have already been screened and matched to the type of work you need.

A strong staffing partner can also help you understand driver availability, pay expectations, and how long it realistically takes to fill roles in your market. Instead of reacting when demand hits, your team can enter peak season with a clearer plan and stronger coverage.

Plan Ahead with a Staffing Partner Who Knows the Road

Seasonal driver demand does not have to catch your team off guard. With the right plan in place, you can fill driver gaps, control costs, and keep freight moving during your busiest periods.

Spectra360 helps employers do exactly that. Beyond filling open seats, our team finds screened drivers who fit the role, timeline, and level of demand you need. Whether you need contingent drivers, temp-to-hire support, or long-term hires, we offer staffing models that scale with your business through GoDrivers360, our dedicated driver staffing division.
