Are You Losing Candidates Before They Even Apply? Fixing the Biggest Hiring Roadblocks in Logistics

Two people in a logistics warehouse, one holding a tablet, discussing inventory while surrounded by stacked boxes on shelves; the Spectra360 logo is at the top left corner.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, logistics jobs are in high demand, and employment is expected to rise by 5.9% from 2023 to 2033.1 This is the perfect time for logistics companies to gain a competitive edge in hiring top talent.

If you’re doing everything right on paper to make your vacant jobs appealing, such as fair pay and a great working environment, but applicants aren’t hitting ‘Apply,’ then the issue might not be the job—it’s how you put it out there.

This article will help you identify what’s holding applicants back and how to improve your hiring strategies, turning job views into actual applications.

Common Challenges in Logistics Recruitment

Finding great logistics workers isn’t always about the job—it may also depend on the recruitment process and candidate experience. If you’re struggling to fill roles, check if these hiring issues are getting in the way:

1. Poor Employer Branding

If your company has bad reviews or no online presence, candidates may not trust it. The talent pool today checks employer ratings just like product reviews. Complaints will make them look elsewhere, while positive reviews can attract them to your company.

2. Unclear Job Posts

A confusing or outdated job post can turn candidates away. If a listing just says “Warehouse Management Associate” without details on duties or hours, people won’t apply because they don’t know what to expect. Likewise, if a job post has been open for too long without being updated, candidates may think it’s already filled or overlooked.

3. Lack of Pay Information

According to a recent Talker Research survey, 86% of Americans believe that job posts should include salary details.2 Candidates are less likely to apply if a job posting says “competitive pay” instead of clearly stating “$22/hour + benefits.”

4. No Flexibility in Work Hours

Since the pandemic, more job seekers want jobs that fit their schedules. If a job only offers strict hours with no flexibility, many will choose an employer that provides different shift options or a better work-life balance.

5. Complicated Applications

A long, frustrating application process can cause candidates to drop off before they even finish. If they have to enter the same information multiple times, struggle with slow online job boards, or can’t easily apply on their phone, they’ll move on to another job with a smoother recruitment process.

6. Slow Response from Recruiters

If candidates don’t hear back quickly, they might assume the company isn’t interested or that hiring isn’t a priority. Even an automatic message saying, “Thanks for applying! We’ll respond within three days,” can keep applications engaged.

7. The Job Isn’t What They Expected

Candidates drop out if the job turns out to be different from what they thought. For example, they might apply for a local delivery job only to find out later that it requires overnight travel. Unclear job details can lead to disappointment, causing candidates to lose interest in the position even if they’re already in the onboarding phase.

How to Improve Hiring in the Logistics Industry

Here are five actionable tips to help logistics candidates follow through with their application:

1. Write Detailed Job Descriptions

A well-written job post can speed up and improve the quality of hiring matches. Start by choosing a specific job title like “Freight Coordinator – Import/Export” instead of a vague one like “Operations Assistant” so candidates can immediately understand the role.

The best job summaries give candidates a clear picture of what they’ll actually do every day or what you need from them. Include which specific soft skills, technical knowledge, or industry experience are required for the role.

For example, instead of saying, “Responsible for handling warehouse tasks,” a better summary would be: “Manage incoming and outgoing shipments, operate forklifts, and keep inventory records accurate in a fast-paced warehouse.” Since the work environment is crucial in logistics, you can also let candidates know if the job involves heavy lifting, night shifts, or extreme temperatures.

2. Offer Competitive Compensation

According to the Association for Supply Chain Management, a higher salary is the most common reason why U.S. supply chain professionals look for a new job.3

To stay competitive, companies should research industry pay rates and adjust salaries based on experience, location, and demand. Adding sign-on bonuses, overtime pay, or performance-based raises can also make your job more appealing.

It’s not enough to offer good benefits. The key is to highlight them in the job post so you can make the most of competitive pay as a selling point. Avoid vague terms like “competitive pay” or “based on experience.” Instead, be clear: “$22-$25/hour based on experience, plus overtime and benefits.”

3. Simplify the Hiring Process with Technology

When everything is done manually, talent acquisition can be slow and frustrating for both employers and candidates. Sorting through resumes, answering the same questions, and going back and forth just to schedule interviews takes too much time and effort.

The right technology can speed up and smoothen your hiring process. Here are a few examples:

  • Automated Emails: Auto-replies can confirm received applications and update applicants on the next steps. This makes them feel reassured and engaged, increasing their chances of submitting their application.
  • Chatbots: Candidates often have quick questions about pay, shifts, or benefits. A chatbot can give instant answers at any time of the day.
  • Interview Scheduling Tools: Instead of constantly going back and forth through email, candidates can pick an available time from a scheduling system, making interviews easier to set up.
  • Mobile-Friendly Applications: Appcast reports that 69% of warehousing and logistics workers apply for jobs using their phones.4 Investing in a simple, mobile-friendly application makes it easier for them to complete the process without hassle.

4. Offer Flexible Work Options

Flexible work options have become more important in the U.S. logistics industry, especially after the pandemic. While remote work isn’t usually possible for most logistics roles, companies can still offer flexibility in other ways. These options can attract candidates by giving them more control over their schedules and helping them balance work and personal life.

  • Shift swaps: Allow employees to trade shifts to better manage personal responsibilities.
  • Part-time schedules: Provide options for reduced hours to accommodate different needs.
  • Four-day workweeks: Enable employees to work full-time hours over fewer days.
  • Staggered start times: Offer varied shift start times to ease scheduling conflicts.
  • Driver route choices: Let drivers select preferred routes when possible for more control over their day.

5. Build a Strong Company Reputation

A poor company reputation can turn candidates away before they even consider applying, especially if the reputation comes from reviews of actual employees. Candidates might encounter feedback like “limited career growth” or “lack of work-life balance.”

So, to respond to employee issues and improve your business operations, here are some ways to enhance your brand.

  • Respond to reviews professionally to show a commitment to improvement.
  • Showcase employee success stories by sharing real experiences from happy employees.
  • Engage on social media by posting about company events and employee achievements.
  • Highlight career growth opportunities like training and promotions on your website, job postings, and social media.
  • Give a behind-the-scenes look at the workplace through photos, videos, or employee testimonials.
