Adapting to Change: What Logistics Candidates Need to Know About Automation Trends

The use of automation technology in logistics is booming; experts predict that the global logistics automation market will reach over $218.81 billion by 2032.1 More and more companies are investing in technologies like robots and drones to make logistics faster and more efficient.

What does this mean for employees? McKinsey & Company estimates that up to 375 million people worldwide may need to change jobs and learn new skills—because automation could replace up to 800 million positions by 2030.2

This means that people who want to thrive in the evolving logistics industry need to step up and evolve, too. The first step is updating yourself with the latest trends in logistics automation.

Key Automation Trends in the Logistics Industry

Here are five major automation technologies that are changing how companies do logistics today.

1. Collaborative and Autonomous Robots in the Warehouse Floor

Robots are powerful automation solutions to important logistics problems, like labor shortages and increased demand from online shopping. Despite these problems, robotic automation allows logistics companies to reduce the need for manual work, improve accuracy, and speed up their processes.

Collaborative robots, or “cobots,” are designed to work alongside people and improve warehouse work. They handle repetitive, dangerous, or physically demanding tasks, like lifting heavy boxes or sorting items for humans to focus on more complex tasks like quality control or customer service. Cobots are safe to work around, with sensors and smart software that help them avoid humans.

On the other hand, Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) are designed to work independently with zero to minimal human interaction. They can carry goods, pick items from shelves, and deliver them to warehouses or distribution centers. Because they don’t need a person to guide them, AMRs help make workflows more efficient and reduce labor costs.

2. Artificial Intelligence for Smarter Supply Chain Management

In a nutshell, Artificial Intelligence (AI) tech helps logistics by automating big data analysis. Based on their analysis, they offer powerful insights that allow smarter decisions.

For example, AI analysis helps businesses make better inventory decisions. Predictive analytics tools look at past sales data to predict future demand, informing businesses how much stock they should have. This way, businesses avoid running out of products or having too much on hand. Additionally, inventory management systems track stock levels in real-time, ensuring that products are restocked when needed. This helps reduce waste and helps control costs.

AI is very valuable and cost-efficient because it doesn’t just analyze vast amounts of data faster—it does the job way more accurately than humans. Reports show that when companies use AI in supply chain forecasting, they lessen errors by up to 50%.3

3. Autonomous Vehicles for Efficient Distribution

Imagine having a set of truck drivers bringing goods all around the country 24/7 without resting—this is what autonomous vehicles can do. They make distribution more efficient and cost-effective by removing the need for human drivers while doing the work better.

Autonomous trucks and delivery vans are very safe. Before any company can use them, they must pass strict safety standards and rigorous testing. These vehicles use AI, sensors, and cameras to drive themselves. With these tools, they can navigate roads and avoid obstacles, reducing the costs associated with accidents and product damage.

They can also react faster than human drivers to specific situations, such as sudden obstacles or changes in traffic. Because they also have built-in traffic detectors, they always choose the fastest and cheapest routes.

4. Drones and Smart Lockers for Last-Mile Delivery

Last-mile delivery, the final step of getting goods to customers, has always been a challenging part of logistics. But new automatic technologies like ground robots and delivery drones can now bring products to people’s doorstep, increasing customer satisfaction.

Companies like Amazon Prime Air and Wing use drones to deliver small packages quickly. These drones fly over traffic and obstacles, making them great for remote or hard-to-reach areas. On the ground, companies like Starship Technologies and Postmates use small robots that can walk along sidewalks and streets. Guided by sensors, ground robots are better for heavier items.

Smart lockers are another innovation that’s improving last-mile delivery. They are located in convenient spots like malls or apartments, letting customers pick up packages anytime. All they have to do is open them through QR codes, sensors, or a mobile app. This way, companies avoid missed deliveries, and customers no longer wait at home for packages.

5. Internet of Things for Real-Time Tracking

Internet of Things (IoT) technology connects everyday items like devices, vehicles, and appliances to the Internet, allowing them to share information and make tasks run more smoothly. In logistics, IoT provides the data needed to automate tracking.

IoT can be used for automation systems all over the supply chain, from start to finish. They can help manage inventory by providing data like temperature to check the condition of sensitive goods. IoT also allows companies to monitor equipment like forklifts. Sensors can check engine temperature, battery life, and movement. If something is wrong, like overheating, the system sends an alert.

IoT also allows monitoring objects away from home base, especially in distribution. Companies use sensors and GPS to always know where products and delivery trucks are. They can also track the condition of their vehicles, such as fuel usage and maintenance needs, ensuring smooth operations.

How to Stay Ahead in Logistics Automation

Logistics is constantly evolving with new technologies, and these trends are likely to shift in the coming years. By staying updated on these changes, you open yourself to learning opportunities, better positions, higher salaries, and a more fulfilling career.

1. Master Tech Tools Based on Your Line of Work

Focus on learning tools relevant to your job. If you work in warehousing or inventory management, get comfortable with systems like Oracle Netsuite or SAP Extended Warehouse Management. If you’re interested in automation or robotics, learn about tools your company may use, such as 6 River Systems or Locus Robotics.

2. Pursue Automation Certifications

By getting certifications, you get trained by respected institutions in logistics. Consider programs like the Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) from the Association for Supply Chain Management, where you can learn about modern logistics technologies flexibly.⁴ Another option is the Lean Six Sigma Certification Program, which has a unique program for logistics.⁵ You can also take courses in robotics or AI on platforms like Coursera, Udemy, or LinkedIn Learning.

3. Expand Your Skill Set to Different Roles

Check yourself and find out which skills you still need to learn. As technology advances, learning about areas outside your current role is essential. For example, you can ask your colleagues to educate you on data analysis in logistics automation. You can also actively participate in training camps run by your employer since most logistics companies now look into in-house training to upskill or reskill their staff.

4. Build Connections with Industry Experts

Grow your network by connecting with automation professionals in logistics. Join groups like the Robotics Industries Association or the International Warehouse Logistics Association to meet people working with the latest technology. Go to events, meetups, or even hackathons where you can collaborate with others and share ideas about logistics automation.

5. Stay Updated on Industry Trends Through Trusted Sources

Many online media offer updated news about logistics and technology. You can subscribe to blogs like Logistics Management and Supply Chain Dive. Social media pages about robotics, AI, and logistics will be helpful for more real-time discussions, like Supply Chain Dive on X (formerly Twitter).
