To find the job you want, you’ve probably done some searching, researched some companies and sent in an application. But that’s where many job seekers stop. The problem with applying to only one job is that you aren’t getting “seen” enough. 

For every job you want, there could be ten other people applying for the same job. Perhaps they have more experience than you, perhaps their resume has better keywords than yours so it jumps to the top of the list, or perhaps they applied before you did. These are all factors that could stop you from getting a callback. Many companies rely on recruiters to find and interview their candidates, so that means that you are competing with many more job seekers. 

So, what’s the fastest way to get the job you want? 

It’s what we call a “numbers game.” If you apply for one job and call it a day, your chances of getting that job are very slim. If you apply for 10 jobs, your chances are better. Simple, right? 

Here’s where we’ll go three steps further: 

Apply for as many jobs as you can in one day and keep a log. 

Write the title of the job, the salary (if you know it), the location, and the company into a spreadsheet. That way, when the recruiter calls you for an interview, you’ll know which job they’re talking about. 

When you get an interview, ask for feedback. 

If you get a call from a recruiter, answer their questions, and at the end, ask three questions:

• What do I need to know to be successful at this job?
  There’s a good chance you’ll have another interview. Knowing what the hiring manager is looking for will make it easier for you to make a great impression. 

• How did I do in the interview? 
  Getting feedback from recruiters will help you in future interviews. 

• Do you have any hints to improve my resume?
  This job might not work out, so get some tips, and maybe you’ll get more calls back on your next round of applications. 

Consider a different job with the same company.

Maybe you’d like to be a manager at Amazon. It’s easier to get promoted from within, so look for jobs that could get you in the door and make a promotion plan. 

Keep in touch with your recruiter. 

If you want to get ahead, make friends with a recruiter. They see new jobs opening up every day. If you stay in touch with your recruiter, you can let them know your next job goal, and they can let you know when they see an opening.
